Freerice has been going since 7th October 2007 and to date they've donated 293,172,530 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.
I started to wonder, just how much rice has been donated? And how much does a person need?
Using some cunning technology, I've calculated the following:
1 teaspoon: 4.1gm (I got this figure here)
*4.1 gm = 194 grains (approx)*
1 kilo of rice = 47,318 grains! (Rough number)
Average portions for 4 adults: 2 cups
2 cups= 195 gms x 2 = 390 gms, or 95.1219 teaspoons
18454 grains of rice!
*Teen tobbot and I used a cough syrup spoon to scoop a teaspoon of rice, we then counted the grains out on a plate.
An individual will need approximately, 4614 grains of rice, or about 95 grammes of rice per meal.
To date, the Freerice programme has donated 6196 kilogrammes of rice, enough to provide about 65219 meals, so keep playing!
