I had been searching for 20 years for a rosebush to signify something very personal within my family. When I visited my ancestral home in Kerela, South India, over 25 years ago, I was invited to sleep in an ornately decorated bed, carved by my great-grandfather. The bed was made from rosewood, a beautiful purple-coloured timber and a particularly hard wood to carve.
At the head of the bed he had carved a rosebush. I was told that my great-grandfather had carved this bed for my grandfather, who later immigrated to Thailand and met my grandmother.
My maternal grandmother's name was Kularb, (Sanskrit for rose).
So this rosebush was planted to honour her, and to let her know I will always love and remember her, as she was the cornerstone of our family. Not only are the blooms beautiful, but the scent of the bush literally fills the air.
